Wrigley Field - Home of the Chicago Cubs

The second oldest ball park in the Major Leagues, Wrigley Field was built in 1914. Known initially as Weeghmann Park, Wrigley Field is one of the most storied venues of Baseball. Babe Ruth's historic “called shot” occurred at Wrigley Field during the 1932 World Series. Then Ruth apparently pointed to the outfield bleachers just before clouting a Charlie Root pitch for a homerun. Although Wrigley Field has the smallest capacity in the National League, the stadium still seats 39,241.

Weeghmann Park was the original name for the eventual Cubs home. Named after Chicago Federals team owner Charles H. Weeghman, the original stadium only sat 14,000. In 1915 the Federals folded along with the rest of the Federal league, leaving the facility without a team. The following season saw Weeghman purchase the Cubs from the Taft family of Cincinnati. From there the Cubs moved into Weeghman Park. The first National League game played there occurred April 20, 1916.

By 1920 Weeghman Park became known as Cubs Park. The name change coincided with the ownership change from Weeghmann to the Wrigley family. In 1926 Cubs Park became known as Wrigley Field in honor of team owner William Wrigley Jr.

Wrigley Field retains its original scoreboard. The score by innings and pitcher's numbers are changed by hand. Another facet of Wrigley Field that so many enjoy is the vine colored outfield walls. The greenery was

planted by Bill Veeck in September of 1937. Lights were only added to the stadium in 1988. The first night game occurred August 8, 1988. That contest was rained out so officially the first game was the Cubs win over the New York Mets on August 9.
